Within Tazewell County there are two hospitals: Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands and Carilion Tazewell Community Hospital in Tazewell. A third one, Bluefield Regional Medical Center, is just across the state line in Bluefield WV. There is also a psychiatric hospital (Behavioral Health Pavilion) and a new Nursing/Assisted Living facility (Mercer Nursing & Rehabilitation Center) on the West Virginia side; all the WV facilities are less than five minutes from Bluefield VA. Due to the proximity of the two Bluefields, many eastern Tazewell County residents avail themselves of medical care on the WV side because of the traveling distance.
Bluefield Regional Medical Center was once a community hospital; it is now owned by a conglomerate. They are a medical and surgical hospital with approximately two hundred beds offering total patient care with obstetrical/gynecological and pediatric services, a Radiation Oncology department and a heart catheterization lab.
On the western end of the county, Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands provides approximately one hundred eighty beds; a Cancer Treatment Center with a state-of-the-art image glided IMRT linear accelerator, the leading edge in the fight against cancer; an out-patient Advanced Wound Center with 2 hyperbole oxygen therapy chambers, and Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation in addition to acute care and all the programs normally available in a hospital. Several clinics have been established in that area including ones in Claypool Hill and Cedar Bluff.
In the center of the county in the town of Tazewell, Carilion Tazewell County Hospital is the only hospital in the state of Virginia that is five star rated for customer service. They offer fifty-six beds with world-class emergency care; a Level 1 trauma center and 24-hour air and ground patient transport services. A two million dollar Emergency Department renovation project was recently completed.
There are out-patient clinics across the county; a new Urgent care, affiliated with Clinch Valley Medical Center, just opened at Pounding Mill with early morning, evening and weekend hours.
The Tazewell County Health Department is nationally accredited and charged with public health and safety. They offer immunization clinics, teaching seminars and many other services. The newly opened living facility in Tazewell offers fifty beds and there is also the new facility just across the state line in Bluefield WV with both nursing and assisted living services.
